The Bond of Belonging

Passage
Sermon Summary
In a culture obsessed with curating the perfect image, we are exhausted from hustling to "fit in." But true belonging isn’t the same as fitting in. Looking at the baptism of Jesus in Mark 1, we see how the Holy Spirit acts as the living bond of belonging that unites us to Christ. Because Jesus stepped into our mess, we can drop our defenses, stop the hustle, and rest in the Father's voice: "You are my beloved."
Discussion Questions (choose any—you don't have to answer them all!)
- Icebreaker: What is a silly or awkward thing you did when you were younger just to "fit in" with the crowd?
- Read Mark 1:7-11. We talked about the difference between John's water baptism (external) and the Spirit's baptism (internal regeneration). Where in your life do you find yourself trying to use "religious hand sanitizer" rather than asking God for a new heart?
- The Hustle: We talked about the exhausting hustle to curate an image so we are accepted. What are the "socks," "resumes," or "images" you are most tempted to put on when you walk into a room where you feel insecure?
- The Secure Base: Human psychology says a child needs a "Secure Base" to face the world. How does hearing the Father say, "You are my beloved," change the way you face stressful situations or seasons of suffering?
- Drop the Sword: What does your "He-Man power sword" look like when you face the wilderness? What is one practical way you can "drop the sword" and rest in the Spirit's tether this week?
