Psalm 126 describes a familiar experience for those who have followed Christ by faith over time: repeated seasons of trial that alternate with rich seasons of blessing. This can confuse the maturest of believers. Does God want to bless you or test you -- or what? Thankfully the Psalm not only describes the experience but also brings a promise that makes sense out of both, giving us an active role in connecting the two redemptively.

Overwhelmed

In God's wisdom, one of the darkest Psalms in the Bible is written to be sung. While the ancient Israelites literally sang its words as part of temple worship, God now invites us to "sing" our sorrows to him in prayer. In particular, Psalm 88 invites us to sing "in tune" (to God, not against God), to sing "in a minor key" (honestly describing our actual experience), and to sing with Jesus (recognizing how he has borne our sorrows himself).

The Voice Of Heaven

Is being a Christian just about attending Sunday services, or is it so much bigger than that, that attending Sunday services doesn't really matter very much? The Bible's teaching on the Sabbath answers both questions in the negative, offering a fuller picture of Sabbath as a weekly rhythm that gives unique meaning to every day of the week. Though found among the Ten Commandments (#4), the spirit of Sabbath-keeping is not to obey it as a dull duty, but to receive it as a generous gift.

Giving Honor

Esther 6:1-11 illustrates two men behaving very badly, Haman and Xerxes. Their symptoms are different, but their problem is the same, what the Bible calls Fear of Man. However, God does not simply judge them, but first stirs them to repent with different "cures": letting Xerxes have what he wants, and not letting Haman get what he wants. God continues to apply these two cures to us today, knowing what each of us needs in our particular moment, and ultimately leading all of us to give honor to the only One who, because of Jesus, even shares his infinite honor with us.

The Long Way Home

When Paul and Barnabas completed their first missionary journey, instead of taking the short route through Paul's hometown, they re-visited the new believers in all the places they'd preached, braving the same hostilities they faced the first time in order to "strengthen the souls of the disciples" and appoint elders in every church. Luke's description of how they did it shows us not only how to encourage others but how to seek encouragement when we need it ourselves.

Real Life and Its Alternatives

Paul and Barnabas' journeys to Iconium and Lystra prove to be two of their most difficult yet, reminding us that sometimes, even while remaining faithful, Christians lose. However, the contrast between the religion of "unbelieving Jews" at Iconium and the irreligion of the pagans at Lystra -- both of which turn blessings into curses in different ways -- the Gospel is much fuller, richer, and more compelling, actually turning curses into blessings.

The Genius of Judgment

The Conclusion to Paul's sermon at Pisidian Antioch is troubling to our modern ears: It includes a strong warning, which prompts a very divided reaction among the crowds. Luke's explanation of why they were divided then raises a thorny theological issue, and Paul and his companions leave town with a symbolic gesture of judgment against it. Yeesh! On closer examination, however, each troubling point proves surprisingly consistent with the first part of Paul's sermon about Jesus and the grace and freedom he brings to those who believe.
